Personal Medication Systems

The patents below protect a system that addresses the multiple problems that patients have with taking medications in ambulatory environments (home, assisted living centers, daycare centers, drug trials). The system consists of a memory device (bar code, RFID tag) adhered to a medication container (vial, blister) – which is then coupled to an electronic console at the patient’s location. Prescription information stored in the memory device is read by the electronic console. The patient then interacts (using displayed/audio instructions and touch controls) with the console to gain assistance in taking their medication correctly. This system addresses the problem of poor medication adherence that creates a $100+ billion per year burden on the US healthcare system in unnecessary hospitalizations, emergency department visits, nursing home admissions, and physician office visits.
